The Meltdown Series by Tom Price
Updated: Jan 30, 2020

Meltdown Chair Series by Tom Price is created by the genius and innovative technique of heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The ball of ropes begins to liquefy as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. No additional material has been added to make the seats and it is all made from melted rope only.
For Price the process of making is as important as the final product and he strongly believes the process is part of the product."I like to think of myself as working in collaboration with materials, processes and phenomena and that the final physical outcome is a product of mutual consent" says Price.
All other chairs of the series are created using the same technique with different plastic materials such as PVC Hose, Polypropylene sheet , Polypropylene tube or any other meltable material.
The rope chairs are also available in a multi-seater version.
